28 Oct How to Access Terratan for Your Products: A Guide to Samples and Technical Evaluation
Choosing a new material is a process, not a single decision. We have designed a clear path from first conversation to production, so your design, sourcing and quality teams know exactly what to expect when evaluating Terratan™.
Step 1: Tell us about your project
Start by contacting our team with a short brief:
- Your company and the product category (fashion, footwear, automotive, furniture or other)
- The intended application and any performance standards you test to
- Preferred colour, texture, thickness and backing, if known
- Expected volumes and timeline
Step 2: Technical data sheet and documentation
We share the Terratan technical data sheet, together with key documentation such as our certifications (USDA Certified Biobased, PETA-Approved Vegan, California Prop 65 compliance), the Safety Data Sheet and, on request, REACH SVHC declarations. This lets your team check the fundamentals before handling material. Our brochure and data sheet are also available from the Terratan page.
Step 3: Samples
Samples are supplied on a paid basis, which lets us give serious projects proper material and support. Depending on your stage, this can be swatches for design review or sample lengths cut from production rolls for prototyping and testing. Our standard material is 1.2 mm; other thicknesses (0.6–1.5 mm), colours and backings can be discussed for development.
Step 4: Prototype and test
- Prototype in your own factory to check cutting, stitching, edge finishing, lasting or upholstering.
- Test the material against your specifications, in your own or an accredited laboratory: abrasion, flex, tensile, tear, colour fastness and any sector-specific tests. See how to evaluate plant-based leather.
- Share feedback with us so we can fine-tune the construction if needed.
Step 5: Development (if required)
For custom colours, grains, thicknesses or backings, or for demanding applications such as automotive interiors, we run a development phase. This may include trial production runs to produce material for validation. Development projects and custom specifications are subject to minimum order quantities, agreed upfront.
Step 6: Approval and production
Once the material is approved, we agree a master sample, colour and quality tolerances, roll specifications and delivery schedule. Production runs roll-to-roll, giving you consistent material that integrates into your existing production line.
Tips for a smooth evaluation
- Involve your quality team from the start and share your test targets early.
- Evaluate the exact construction you intend to buy.
- Plan for lead time on custom colours and development runs.
